Brydekirk to Annan River Walk

Rob and I decided to go for a slightly longer walk today - a six mile circular walk from Brydekirk to Annan along the banks of the River Annan, and back. The directions for the walk can be found on page 14, option C of the Annan Walking Booklet.

We saw many different bird species, including herons (one shown below), dippers, mallards, goosander (I think!), and the usual smaller birds.

This is the Jubilee Suspension Bridge, one of four bridges along this stretch of the river.

There were carpets of wildflowers in the woods and fields along the way. Lots of wood anemones, bluebells, forget-me-nots (below) and more.

 A view of the weir.

 Approaching Annan.

We stopped in Annan for a coffee and a sit down before starting on the return journey to Brydekirk, on the opposite river bank, passing through the Park in Annan.

Patchwork, Embroidery and Weaving Exhibition

Rob and I went to the Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries today, where an exhibition called "A Trio of Textiles" is being held 21 April - 12 May 2012.

The exhibition includes work by local artists and crafts people in the disciplines of embroidery, weaving and patchwork & quilting.

Sadly, I forgot my camera, but Rob lent my his phone camera to take a few snaps.

These chocolates were lovely - felt decorated with beads and embroidery, in a handmade paper box.

This wall hanging is made of felted wool. The colours, patterns and textures are beautiful.

I am very fond of miniatures, so this tiny, embroidered rug caught my eye.

There were dozens of patchwork quilts, artworks, bags, and toys etc to see.

Back in the weaving exhibition, we both loved these woven wall hangings - unfortunately this poor quality photo does not do the colours justice. I bought some hand dyed fabric and cotton embroidery thread from this artist.

This exhibition is well worth a visit. Entry is free, and there is a cafe and a craft shop to enjoy afterwards.

Durisdeer Walk

Rob and I went for a walk near the village of Durisdeer in Dumfries & Galloway on Thursday 1 March 2012. We stopped in the village and had a look around the graveyard and church.

We headed up the Well Path, through the hills, passing a Roman Fortlet.

There were lots of red grouse calling out to each other and we saw males and females. I think the males were establishing their territories and attracting females.

Rob made the last collage from his photos.

We stopped at Thornhill on the way home for lunch at Thomas Tosh to round off a very pleasant day.
