It stands for People Against Litter. If you sign up as a
member, you pledge to pick up at least one piece of litter per week and
get someone else to also become a PAL who in turn "recruits" another and
so on.

It is very easy to pick up a piece or two of litter and bin it. It improves the environment for everyone and, I think, discourages other people from dropping litter. My husband and I will often clear a one mile section of our road while walking the dog - it takes very little effort to vastly improve the look of the road.
Author, David Sedaris, is a famous litter picker-upper and has been honoured by having a dust cart named after him:-
